The Heritage Garden Restoration Initiative, a community-driven rural economic development project, aims to restore heirloom garden plots in the Historic Hogg Hummock community on Sapelo Island, thus preserving the cultural and agricultural heritage of our local community. This project will involve community engagement, historical research, garden restoration, and educational outreach.
Our new initiative objective and goal is to address food security issues on the island by revitalizing and restoring kitchen garden plots that have already been established (i.e. they have fencing). We will secure funding to pay our skilled farmers to take an assessment, secure plants, seeds, fruit trees, farm tools, etc to do the work. Our ultimate goal is an ecosystem of front yard garden spaces, backyard gardens, culinary and medicinal herbs gardens, orchards and flower gardens flourishing all over our Historic community! This is our way of addressing food security.
Donations made will allow us to purchase necessary tools, plants, seeds, irrigation systems, fruit trees, and edible landscaping materials. It will also allow us to pay skilled farmers to do the work. We thank you in advance for sowing a seed into our initiative.
