The Mystic Roots Foundation Community Wellness Program is deeply inspired by the long history of Black mutual aid societies, which were created as systems of collective care, resource sharing, and community survival in times when Black communities were excluded from many public institutions and services. Rooted in the traditions of cooperation, healing, food sharing, and communal responsibility, our program continues this legacy by creating spaces where people can support one another through wellness education, fresh food access, herbal care, and community gathering. In honoring these traditions, we carry forward ancestral practices of caring for the collective while building healthier and more resilient communities for future generations.

Our Community Wellness Program is a community-centered initiative rooted in ancestral healing traditions, collective care, and the belief that wellness begins with access to nourishing food, herbal knowledge, and meaningful human connection. Designed to support the well-being of the historic Hogg Hummock community on Sapelo Island, the program creates spaces where residents and visitors can gather, learn, and heal.
At the heart of the program is our Community Wellness Pop-Up Farmers Market, where fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, pantry items, and wellness resources are distributed to the community. The program also provides seasonal herbal wellness kits featuring handcrafted teas, oils, tinctures, salves, and other plant-based remedies inspired by traditional folk healing practices. Through herbal wellness education, workshops, and community gatherings, we work to preserve ancestral knowledge while promoting holistic health, food access, mutual support, and long-term community resilience rooted in the land and traditions of the Gullah Geechee people.

Our monthly pop-up farmers market is located at the Hogg Hummock Artisan Market, and is a gathering rooted in nourishment, wellness, and collective care. Residents are provided with a reusable market bag and invited to freely select fresh fruits and vegetables at no cost, ensuring access to healthy, nourishing food for our community members and families. The market also offers herbal wellness products, organic seeds for home gardening, and opportunities to learn about holistic wellness practices.

Our seasonal herbal wellness kits are distributed to community members in the spirit of collective care and wellness accessibility. Each thoughtfully curated kit includes a variety of handcrafted herbal products such as tea blends, salves, massage oils, tinctures, and fresh herbs designed to support seasonal health and holistic well-being. These kits serve as a way to nourish, comfort, and support residents while preserving the rich legacy of herbal medicine within Gullah Geechee culture.
